Having Islam on the outside without spiritual Islam on the inside is not proper Islam. HOWEVER, what I came to find about Sufism is that in addition to merely being spiritual, Sufis are extremely organized into a structure that is not traditional in Islam.
In contrast, Muslim opponents of Sufism have been anxious to show that Sufism is a distortion of Islam, and they have happily seized upon any opportunity to associate Sufism with unbelief and moral laxity (see Carl Ernst, Words of Ecstasy in Sufism, Albany, 1985, pp. 117ff.).

The period of the Salaf is thought to end at the close of the 5 th Islamic century ending with the likes of Imam al-Bayhaqi (d. 458/1066). A growing number of Islamic extremists accuse Sufis of idol worship, or shirk, and have recently taken to violence, destroying Sufi shrines and killing Sufi worshipers in the name of purifying Islam.
